Matilda Mwaba dies

Matilda Mwaba-Lucas, daughter to Ms Mwaba announced the sad development.

Ms Mwaba started her career in the corporate sector, however, after training in martial arts she was elected Chairperson of the Zambia Police Judo Club from 1997-1998.

She was then elected president of the Zambian National Judo Federation and served for 7 years.

Ms. Mwaba also served on the National Olympic Committee of Zambia Board.

She was the first female Judo Association President and later founded and became Chief Executive Director of the National Organisation for Women in Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation (NOWSPAR), a sports NGO.

NOWSPAR’s mission is to advocate for the equal participation of women and girls in sport at all levels, through research, policy analysis, awareness-raising and capacity development of women in sport and organisations to enhance the delivery of sport for the benefit of women.

Zambian president dismisses health minister, no reason given

Zambian President Edgar Lungu has dismissed Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya with immediate effect, the president’s office said on Sunday, without giving a reason for the move.

Once seen as a potential presidential replacement for Lungu, Chilufya’s political ambitions have faded amid growing calls for his dismissal from opposition parties and health workers.

“The President has thanked Dr Chilufya for the services rendered to government and wished him well in his future endeavours,” the office said in a statement.

Chilufya, health minister since his appointment in 2016, was not immediately available for comment. - [REUTERS]

Lusaka’s popular chilling spot Grandaddy’s Shoka Nyama has been closed for a week due to the new strain of COVID-19 whose cases are on the upswing.

It wrote in a notice: “Due to the rising number of cases & the new strain in Zambia, we will be closing for our 1-week break, starting today. The rumour making its way around is unfounded, nevertheless- at Grandaddy’s we do care and we will monitor the situation before making a decision on reopening.” - [Zambia Reports Website]

Zambia's President dismisses 2 policemen following the death of two protesters

Zambian President Edgar Lungu has dismissed two police officials and ordered for the investigation to be fast-tracked into the deaths of two opposition demonstrators last week in Lusaka.

Two protesters were killed on December 23 when riot police broke up a rally outside the police headquarters where the main opponent of the Zambian government, Hakainde Hichilema was being probed.

Hichilema told journalists that he was called in to answer questions about a property purchase he made 20 years ago.

President Lungu received a preliminary report on the deaths of two citizens last week in Lusaka and has made changes in police command to allow for a speedy investigation," according to a Zambian presidential statement.

President Lungu is struggling with a wave of unpopularity and internal divisions within his party, fuelled by Zambia's economic problems and anger at perceived corruption.

A veteran campaigner and self-made entrepreneur, Hichilema bid five times for the presidency between 2006 and 2016.

After narrowly losing in 2016, he spent four months in jail when he contested the outcome.

He has vowed to step down as leader of the United Party for National Development (UPND) if he fails once more.
