Zambia Bureau of Standards seize expired drinks valued at K81, 677.00

Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS) Head of Marketing and Public Relations Hazel Zulu has said the bureau in a bid to promote quality and safe products and safeguard the health of consumers has issued a product rejection notice to Clement Mwila General Dealers of new market in Chinsali District, Muchinga Province for selling expired products contrary to the Standards Act Cap 416 of the laws of Zambia and the food and drugs regulations.

In a statement today, Mrs. Zulu said this was after ZABS inspectors conducted a routine market surveillance and inspection in the area on 4th May 2017 and found assorted expired drinks valued at K81, 677.00.

“The products that were seized include 811 cases of Mirinda flavoured drinks in quantities of 500mls and 300mls, 183 cases of Milk Maheu also in quantities of 300mls and 500mls, and 416 cases of Shakers drink in 300mls and 500mls bottles and 42 milk sachets in quantities of 500mls. All these products were expired but were being sold to unsuspecting consumers”.

She has since warned warn traders and retailers in Zambia that selling of expired products is illegal and unacceptable as the quality and safety of such products cannot be guaranteed.

“We have consistently said that traders and retailers should employ and implement effective stock rotation schedules to ensure that they monitor the inflow and outflow of their products so that products are sold on first in first out basis” She said.

Mrs. Zulu added that the bureau expects any serious and responsible business entity or individual in Zambia should be able to adhere to set standards and provide quality and safe products to consumers everywhere in our country.
She also urged consumers to be quality and safety conscious and shun buying substandard products.

“They should take time to read the details on the product before making a purchase. This will aid in stamping out the sale of substandard products as there will be no ready market for such” Mrs. Zulu said.
